ROTHENBURG OB DER TAUBER, Germany — The Ansbach Elementary School Choir continued a cherished holiday tradition Dec. 11 with a performance at the world-famous Rothenburg ob der Tauber Weihnachtsmarkt, marking the 13th consecutive year U.S. military-connected students have shared their music in the historic medieval town.

The annual appearance has become a holiday highlight for USAG Ansbach Garrison families and local residents alike, offering students a unique opportunity to celebrate the season while participating in a meaningful cultural exchange. The tradition began 13 years ago at Illesheim Elementary under the leadership of music teacher Amanda Ralston, teacher Ida DeHaan-Weissman, and 12th Combat Aviation Brigade liaison Helga Moser, before moving to Ansbach Elementary in 2015, where it has continued to grow.

Rothenburg’s Weihnachtsmarkt, a tradition spanning more than 500 years, is known for its storybook setting and its distinctive Advent calendar displayed on the historic Rathaus. Each evening during Advent, a new window is illuminated, transforming the building into a life-size calendar. On Dec. 11, Ansbach Elementary unveiled its custom-designed window themed “Swingin’ Into the Season.” The design featured red, white and blue elements inspired by the American flag, symbolizing unity and the diverse backgrounds of military-connected families. Stars incorporated into the display represented hometowns and loved ones across the United States.

Under the direction of Dr. Whitney Mansell, who has led the choir for the past decade, 56 students performed six jazz-inspired holiday selections as part of a program titled “American Swinging Holiday.” Their energetic harmonies and rhythmic flair blended American musical traditions with the festive atmosphere of the German market, drawing enthusiastic responses from the crowd.

“Ansbach Elementary Choir’s performance is a highlight and favorite event of the season,” said Dr. Markus Naser, mayor of Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

The event was attended by original organizers Ida DeHaan-Weissman and Helga Moser, Ansbach Elementary School Principal Patrice Powdar, and Col. Aaron J. Southard, commander of USAG Ansbach, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the U.S. military community and local German neighbors.

More than a concert, the annual performance serves as a symbol of friendship, cultural appreciation and shared holiday spirit. For Ansbach Elementary students and their families, participating in Rothenburg’s historic Weihnachtsmarkt creates lasting memories while strengthening connections that bridge cultures and borders.
