‘Best Hometown in Europe’ celebrates Read Across America

Ansbach Elementary School buzzed with excitement during Read Across America Week from March 3-6, as students, teachers, and community members came together to celebrate literacy.
This year, the Student Council organized themed dress-up days, fifth graders welcomed military police guest readers, and community leaders visited the school library to share their favorite books with students.
On Monday, for Green Eggs and Ham Day, the school librarian read Green Eggs and Ham and Fox in Socks to kindergarten and first-grade students. Laughter filled the room as the young readers giggled at the books’ playful rhymes and tongue twisters.
Tuesday’s theme, Favorite Book Character Day, featured guest reader Chief Warrant Officer 5 Jonathan Hulse, who read Let’s Go for a Drive! and The Sour Grape to a kindergarten class. His animated storytelling had students laughing throughout.
On Wednesday, for Cat in the Hat Day, Trude Moellman, outreach director and school liaison officer, read Hotel Bruce and After the Fall to a third-grade class. When asked what they learned from After the Fall, third grader Adilyn Howard responded, “Don’t let what happened in your past determine your future.”
Thursday, the final day of Read Across America Week, was themed Oh, the Places You’ll Go! Col. Ryan Kendall read The Bad Seed—a favorite from his own children’s younger years—to a third-grade class. “I had so much fun reading to Mrs. Bates’ class!” Kendall said. “It was a great way for me to connect with such an important part of our community – our kids – and to spend time with them. I can’t wait to do it again!”
Other guest readers on Thursday included Sgt. Solano, who read the Grimm’s fairy tale Rapunzel to a fifth-grade class, and high school teacher and parent Sarah Romero, who shared Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing with the same group of students.
Ansbach Elementary School extends its gratitude to all who took time out of their busy schedules to inspire young readers. The school community is proud to be part of “The Best Hometown in Europe.”
