From Cubs to Cougars: Ansbach Elementary celebrates fifth graders’ next step
ANSBACH, Germany – On May 29, 2026, DoWEA Ansbach Elementary students and staff hosted a spirited Cougar Cub celebration to honor fifth graders transitioning to middle school, highlighted by a senior-led walk and inspiring stories from graduating Ansbach Middle High School (AMHS) seniors who once began their journeys in Ansbach elementary schools.
About 10 a.m., the familiar sound of the graduation march played over the loudspeakers, signaling the arrival of AMHS seniors. These seniors walked to fifth-grade classrooms and escorted students through hallways lined with cheering kindergarten through fourth-grade peers holding handmade signs.
The procession traveled through the upper corridor, down the back stairs, and past kindergarten classrooms, creating a meaningful sendoff that symbolized both reflection and forward progress. The walk concluded outside, where families gathered to greet students with applause and encouragement.
“This tradition builds excitement and pride across all grade levels,” said Anna Rudolph, fifth-grade teacher. “Our younger students look up to both the fifth graders and seniors, and our fifth graders feel truly celebrated.”
Following the celebration, fifth graders and their parents were escorted by the seniors to AMHS to participate in “Meet the Mids.” During this transition event, students were introduced to their new school environment, explored scheduling, class options, looked at lockers, and enjoyed lunch at AMHS alongside their parents.
Among the AMHS seniors leading the walk were students whose educational journeys began in the Ansbach elementary schools. AMHS Valedictorian, Kennedy L., started her DoWEA experience at Rainbow Elementary in kindergarten before moving to Ansbach Elementary in first grade and continuing on to AMHS. Her journey will continue at the United States Air Force Academy, where she will report for training shortly after graduation.
“I’ve grown up in this community, and it’s shaped who I am today,” said Kennedy. “Coming back to walk these halls reminds me of where I started and motivates me for what’s ahead.”
Senior Chance D. also reflected a deep connection to the Ansbach school system. He began in kindergarten at the former Illesheim Elementary School and continued to AMHS. He represents a remarkable family legacy as the last of the family’s children to attend AMHS, with six of the seven graduating from the school beginning in 2013.
“It’s an honor to be part of a tradition my family has carried on for years,” said Chance. “Being the last to attend AMHS makes this moment even more meaningful.”
Fifth graders expressed excitement as they made their way through cheering crowds.
“It felt really special having everyone clap for us,” said fifth grade student Phoenix R. “I’m excited but also a little nervous for middle school.”
The Cougar Cub celebration not only recognized the achievements of the fifth graders but also reinforced the strength of the school community. Through shared traditions and meaningful connections, students were reminded that each step forward builds on the foundation of those who came before them.
