Fifth Graders Explore History, Innovation, and Culture at Faber Castell

ANSBACH, Germany – For the second year in a row, Ansbach Elementary School’s fifth‑grade students participated in a meaningful educational field trip organized by 5th grade teacher Anna Rudolph to the Faber‑Castell factory in nearby Stein, Germany.

During the visit, students learned about the history of the Faber‑Castell company, one of the world’s oldest and most respected manufacturers of pencils and art supplies. This experience directly supported social studies curriculum standards by helping students explore historical timelines, entrepreneurship, and how family‑owned businesses can grow and adapt over generations.

Students also examined the process of making colored pencils, from raw material sourcing to final production. These observations reinforced STEAM learning, particularly in science and engineering, as students learned about materials science, manufacturing processes, sustainability, and quality control. Discussions about responsible forestry and renewable resources highlighted real‑world applications of environmental science.

The tour further connected to economics standards, as students explored how natural resources are sourced, how goods are produced and distributed, and how Faber‑Castell has expanded its operations globally while maintaining sustainable practices. Students gained insight into careers, trade, and the role innovation plays in global markets.

In addition to academic learning, the field trip gave students the opportunity to connect with and explore their host nation, Germany, in a new and meaningful way. Visiting a locally significant company allowed students to develop a deeper appreciation for German culture, industry, and history, strengthening their understanding of the host‑nation experience that is central to DoWEA’s mission.

This multidisciplinary experience successfully bridged classroom learning with real‑world applications while fostering cultural awareness, critical thinking, and global citizenship. The Faber‑Castell visit continues to be a valuable and enriching tradition for fifth‑grade students at Ansbach Elementary School.
